One of the most obvious outside changes during winter is the absence of flying insects like bees, mosquitos and flies. These flying insects are usually associated with the summer or fall so we are thankful once winter approaches and there is a lack of them.
Although we are missing the flying insects, it doesn’t mean that all pests are nonexistent. There is still the possibility of spiders, cockroaches and mice crawling around. Because of the cold temperatures, these pests are looking for shelter and unfortunately, your warm home is the perfect spot. Because pests can cause some serious damage, it’s important to take preventative actions. Along with doing damage, rodents carry diseases, spiders can cause serious side effects if bitten and cockroaches can be a trigger for allergies or asthma.
Tips to Prevent Winter Pests From Entering Your Home
- Seal off any exterior cracks or holes. Check any pipes that enter your home for this is an easy entrance for a mouse.
- Be sure to replace any loose weather stripping or mortar that is located around your windows or basement foundation.
- For homes with a fireplace, keep firewood at least 20 feet away from your home. If the piles are close, mice and ants will make their nests here and can easily make their way into your home.
- Keep all storage areas organized and clutter free to prevent hiding spots for rodents.
- Repair or replace any leaking pipes or clogged drains. Areas with an increase in moisture are vulnerable to cockroach infestations.
- Be sure to keep your crawl space, basement and attic well ventilated and dry.
