We know we’ve said it before, but it is always worth the reminder: cold, winter weather brings an increase in rodents such as mice and rats in homes and other buildings. Like us, these critters want to stay warm, so it is likely that more will be trying to seek shelter and access into buildings.
While many of us do well with preventative measures such as sealing cracks in walls or windows or sealing up the chips and other snacks in our cabinets, there is one other important factor that could attract these pests that people tend to overlook. Pet food! If you have a cat, dog or other pet indoors and you leave food out throughout the day and night, you may find this to be the reason you’ve spotted a mouse or rat scurrying across the floor.
It is for this reason that we suggest you only leaving food out for your pets for a limited span of time and also be sure to seal pet food bags tightly and keep them off of the floor (rodents can still chew through these!). Many homeowners have benefited from this simple tip, which applies and should be used in all seasons, not only the winter.
